Posture

Have you ever noticed that nobody actually wants good posture? What they want is what good posture allows: a neck that turns, a back that does not ache by three o’clock.

Chiropractic care may help you manage the neck, back and shoulder pain that goes with the way you sit, stand and work.

What it is

Posture is a habit the body adapts to. Hours at a screen, a phone held low, a soft couch, a bag on one shoulder: the body adapts to repeated inputs, and over time some joints stiffen while some muscles tighten and others switch off. That is when the aches start.

There is no single correct posture. There is the posture you can hold comfortably and move out of easily, and that is what we work towards.

Posture assessment

What we assess

  • Your history: what you do all day, where it hurts, when it hurts.
  • How you stand, sit and move; which joints have lost movement; which muscles are tight or weak.
  • Joint, muscle and nerve testing, with hands-on examination. On-site X-rays if clinically indicated.

Your initial consultation is $49 and includes the examination, on-site X-rays if clinically indicated, an adjustment if clinically indicated, and the planning session where we go through what we found. What to expect →

What care looks like

Adjustments to the joints that have stiffened, hands-on work for the muscles, and specific strengthening for the ones that have switched off.

At-home work and a practical look at your desk, screen, chair, car seat and pillow. Small inputs, repeated, are what change posture.

A plan with a number of visits, reviewed as you go. Like all treatments, chiropractic care can have side effects; the common ones are mild and short-lived, such as soreness after an adjustment. We discuss this with you before care starts.

When to see your GP first

Some symptoms need a doctor before anyone else. See your GP, or emergency care, if you have:

  • A sudden change in posture or a new curve in the spine, especially in a child or teenager.
  • Posture change with pain at night, fever, or unexplained weight loss.
  • Numbness, weakness or clumsiness in the arms or legs.

If you are unsure, call us and ask. We would rather send you to the right person than have you guess.

Questions

Can posture be corrected in adults?

Habits can change at any age, and stiff joints can move better. We do not promise a particular shape; we work on comfort, movement and the inputs that got you here.

Does my child need a posture check?

Only if something is worrying you: a visible curve, one shoulder or hip sitting higher, or pain. Children do not need routine spinal checks.
